Is AI the missing factor in whether or not we cure cancer? tsvi gal from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and his team are at the forefront of cancer research and he shared some of his data with us during his AI Networking Summit keynote. Decades ago, a diagnosis of stage two breast cancer meant a 36% chance of surviving beyond five years. Fast forward to today, thanks to the integration of AI in healthcare, that same patient now has an astounding 97% survival rate! AI isn't just about data; it's about saving lives. With tools like GPT-4, they're predicting life expectancies with a jaw-dropping accuracy rate of 97%. This isn't just progress; it's a revolution in understanding cancer evolution and treatment. I appreciate Jonathan H. Chen inviting me to give a talk today to the Stanford Center for Biomedical Informatics Research (BMIR) on the Risks and Challenges of AI, especially in the week when AI researchers won two Nobel prizes: in Physics and Chemistry! We covered a number of topics, including challenges with LLMs, including opacity, hallucinations and bias; how AI can increasingly identify "deidentified" medical images; privacy and security threats, including AI-powered cyberattack exploits and social engineering campaigns; the use of deepfake audio, video and photos for manipulation, harrassment, theft and extortion; AI killer robots (a real thing!); and recent warnings about existential threats from AI superintelligence. Today, I’m excited to share that GE HealthCare and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have announced a collaboration to develop purpose-built foundation models and generative #AI applications designed to support clinicians in improving medical diagnosis and patient care. 💥   I am passionate about how foundation models and generative AI can help transform healthcare. A few days ago I attended the strategy meeting of a portfolio #startup. Like all of our Synapse Partners portfolio companies, this one provides #AI solutions to #enterprise customers. Their initial success is in the medical devices industry. While reviewing the company’s sales pipeline and the progress of delivering the company’s solution to signed customers, several of the enterprise’s struggles with #generativeAI became evident. These struggles can be attributed to a lack of people with the right background and the state of the #enterprisedata.

One key reason why healthcare technologies like AI, telemedicine, and software haven't structurally lowered costs or broadened access for the entire system after decades of experimentation (excluding pure financial engineering of payer contracts) is the limited reimagining of care delivery itself, with asynchronous telemedicine as a notable exception. In the same way that digitizing physical paper failed to exploit the capabilities of a new computing medium for word processing, hosting physician-patient conversations over video does not transform the actual delivery of care. In telemedicine, many of the inputs (e.g., clinician time) and therefore cost structures of in-person care persist, which is why we often see fee-for-service telemedicine companies struggle to achieve economies of scale (i.e., growing revenues non-linearly while growing costs linearly). Until we deconstruct the components of a medical appointment – from intake and triage, to chart review, history gathering, physical examination, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up – we will continue to be underwhelmed by the disconnect between the transformative potential of these technologies and real-world patient/system impact. I’m optimistic that the emergence of reliable and performant medical AI agents will urge us to perform this deconstruction and redesign the fundamental building blocks of a “medical appointment.”

On Monday nurses from across California picketed outside Kaiser Permanente's San Francisco Medical Center to protest the use of AI. In the past year I’ve presented my views on AI and its impact on nursing to America’s largest nursing association, one of the largest unions representing nurses, leadership from top provider organizations and at a number of nursing conferences. Regardless of the group my message is always the same: ·      AI is one of the greatest issues impacting the future of work for nurses. (let’s figure this out together). ·      Done right AI is not about technology. It’s about empowerment. The rub here is defining “done right.”  This is at the heart of why nurses hit the picket line in California and why I have predicted for some time that AI would become a bargaining issue. ·      Nurses are among the most important constituents to guide AI-driven workflow change and shape Responsible AI principles. Period. If you are a nurse or health leader reading this here’s the question: Are nurses actively involved in your organization’s efforts to plan/deploy/measure the value of AI applied in care settings? I’ve had the privilege of working with some great health and medical organizations around the world in planning and implementing AI. A key difference between organizations that use AI to create value-at-scale versus those that spin up a few pilot use cases comes down to this: Repeatable value comes by involving those on the front lines who drive any process to be improved with AI. These are people who know what isn’t working and are almost always the smartest to know what will. Generative AI is transforming healthcare, and we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface. 🚀 I had the opportunity to attend an insightful #HLTH2024 session featuring Daniel Yang, MD, VP of AI and Emerging Technologies at Kaiser Permanente, Parminder Bhatia, Chief AI Officer at GE HealthCare, Bianca Diana Anghelina, Founder of AILY LABS, and Rohan Ramakrishna, MD, Neurosurgeon and Co-Founder of Roon. Here are some standout insights: 🔹 AI to Alleviate the Supply and Demand Problem Dr. Yang emphasized that the traditional 1:1 clinician-to-patient model is not sustainable with the growing demand for healthcare services. "We’re not going to train our way out of this problem." AI is key to augmenting clinicians, moving toward a 1:Many model, empowering patients to self-manage their care with enhanced support. 🔹Unlocking Data to Drive Proactive Care Parminder shared that 90% of health data remains untapped. With AI, we can unlock this data to move from reactive to proactive care, improving patient outcomes and making healthcare more efficient. 🔹 Integration is Key to Success Rohan Ramakrishna emphasized the need for AI to seamlessly integrate into clinical workflows, using EHR in-basket management as an example. While AI can improve these processes, the technology still has work to do in minimizing errors and ensuring clinicians can rely on it for better patient care. 🔹 AI Enhancing the Patient Experience Kaiser Permanente's deployment of Ambient Scribe to over 25,000 doctors has not only eased administrative burdens but also improved patient satisfaction. Patients reported feeling more transparent communication and greater insights into their clinical care. This AI tool has allowed providers to refocus attention on the patient, strengthening trust in the care process. 🔹 Trust in AI is Critical Trust also continues to be a recurring theme. As Daniel Yang said, "Explainability is a proxy for trust—if we understand how AI works, we trust it." Transparency, particularly in clinical settings, is crucial to earning patient trust. Rohan Ramakrishna echoed this by stating that radical transparency is a must when deploying AI in healthcare.
